- Encouraging staff in their personal relationships with Christ - Building relationships in community - Investing in staff development - Teaming across departments - Anticipating the changing nature of our operation - Maintaining “as new” facilities - Meeting the YL Service theme
Program Purpose
The year-round intern program is designed for people who are deeply committed to Christ and desire to join our Camping Staff to help create and provide an environment where Young Life Field and Camping Staff, volunteers, and guests of Lost Canyon can experience Christ. We believe this will be a life-changing experience in which each intern will grow spiritually, personally, relationally, and professionally and will come away more energized and prepared for a lifetime of service.
Commitment
Lost Canyon is committed to making the year-round internship both challenging and rewarding. Much will be asked and much will be given as we serve Christ in a community of believers. Interns will be involved in Bible study, small group worship, sharing and fellowship, all while living in community with fellow interns. All interns must be willing to commit to all aspects of the program which will focus on Christ, Discipleship, Community and Career.
Christ, Discipleship, Community
and Career
Christ-“I deliberately kept it plain and simple; first Jesus and who He is; then Jesus and what He did-Jesus crucified.” 1 Corinthians 2:2 The most important aspect of the year-round internship program is spiritual growth. This can only happen through surrender; surrender to the Lord, surrender to challenging circumstances and struggles, and surrender of self.
Discipleship
-“To open their eyes…that they may receive.” Acts 26:18 All interns will meet collectively and in small groups with both the Intern Coordinator and camping staff. These are designed to be times of exploration into each other’s lives, and will be significant in creating a community defined by love and truth. Interns will also meet monthly with the Young Life Southwest Region’s Field Interns. In addition to the discipleship aspect of this time, it is designed for fellowship and greater understanding of Young Life Field Ministry. These training times will be conducted by Sr. Area Director/Regional Trainer, Rick Wilson.
Community
-“You can develop a healthy, robust community that lives right with God, and enjoy its results only if you do the hard work of getting along with each other, treating each other with dignity and honor.” James 3:18
Interns will be housed on property with other interns of the same gender. The interns are part of the Lost Canyon community that is committed to excellence in all areas including service to each other. Living in such a unique communal environment is both a blessing and a challenge that requires selflessness. In addition to living and working together, interns will play together; hosted outings to entertainment and sporting events, seasonal trips, etc…
Community II
-“The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood” John 1:14 We believe that the community of Lost Canyon is called not only to be “Light” to our guests, but also to the community of Northern Arizona. Year-Round Interns will have the opportunity to volunteer as Young Life/Wyldlife leaders, donate time to civic endeavors, tutor or coach at local schools etc.. While not required, volunteerism will be encouraged.
Career
-“The harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few.” Mathew 9:36-38 Interns will be trained and expected to work in a number of different areas of Lost Canyon’s operation. Regular reviews will be conducted by Department Heads. Interns will also be receiving aptitude/personality testing and consultation conducted by Dr. Don Worcester. Test results, personal dialogue and performance will be used to help each intern explore vocational opportunities within Young Life Field and Camping Departments, and outside of Young Life. Our desire is that each intern would complete her/his internship with a more clear sense of God’s calling in their lives.
Responsibilities
During the school year, year-round interns will work a 5-day work week with 2 consecutive days off. The work will include a variety of jobs in the primary departments of operation; Guest Services-(hosting guest groups, program activities, sound and video operations and production, pool/Jacuzzi oversight, game-room, etc...), Maintenance-(general construction, repairs, landscaping, vehicle operation and maintenance, snow removal, etc..), Housekeeping-(cabin turnover, laundry, general cleaning, etc..), Retail-(Store/Coffee Shop/Snack Bar operations and inventory), Kitchen-(food-prep, inventory, work-crew/volunteer supervision, etc..). Year-Round Interns will spend 8-10 weeks in each of the primary departments of operation. There will be times when interns are asked to work outside their designated department to prepare for incoming guest group.
Compensation
In addition to the invaluable life experience, Year-Round Interns will be paid Arizona minimum hourly wage based on a minimum 40 hour work week. Interns will also receive room and partial board during the school-season and complete board during the summer camping season. Interns will also receive full health benefits (medical, dental, vision). Young Life also recognizes 12 paid holidays and gives 2 weeks of paid vacation (to be taken Sept-May) Fundraising Year-Round Interns will have the privilege and responsibility of raising $9000 ($1000/month of the school-year) during the course of their internship. Interns will be coached, equipped and encouraged through the entire fundraising process. The reason for this responsibility is two-fold; 1)our brothers and sisters in Young Life Field Ministry are responsible to raise all of their support, by raising a fraction of their compensation, Lost Canyon Interns gain empathy, a reliance on Christ to provide, and the skills to fundraise should they choose to go into Field Ministry. 2) The $9000 raised helps make this program possible. The fundraised money is not an addition to salary.
Expectations
For your own benefit and that of the community of Lost Canyon Year-Round Interns are required to meet the following qualifications and are asked to eliminate as many distractions to personal growth as possible. To that end;
1-Interns must be a minimum of 20 years old, and have completed a minimum of an AA Degree.
2-Interns will refrain from the use of alcohol, tobacco products, and illegal narcotics, on or off property for the entire year-long commitment.
3-RELATIONSHIPS: During the yearlong stay at Lost Canyon, interns will build great friendships that will last a lifetime, however due to the potential for divisiveness, we ask that participants in the internship program not pursue “exclusive couple” relationships with members of the Lost Canyon community.
