Saranac Village is owned and operated by Young Life, a non-profit organization founded in 1941. Young Life is committed to making an impact on kids lives and preparing them for the future by sharing with them the gospel of Jesus Christ. With 15 outreach camps in the United States, thousands of high school and middle school students' lives are impacted every summer at these camps.
History In the early part of the 1900s, Adolph Lewishon, a very wealthy investor from New York City, set out to build a summer retreat for his family. He chose a site on a peninsula on Upper Saranac Lake in the Adirondack Mountains. On the site, he had constructed an Adirondack Great Camp. This Great Camp was comprised of numerous spectacular buildings, many of which are connected with covered walkways. Used to only the most luxurious of surroundings, Lewishon spent $2.5 million in 1904 to build his retreat.
Today This Adirondack Great Camp was acquired by Young Life in 1969 and although it is now used by 300 high school campers and 150 staff each week rather than just one family, the distinctiveness and unique architectural features have been preserved and the property remains today a "must see" for historical and architectural tours.
