Young Life Malawi

Malawi is known as "The Warm Heart of Africa" and it is a well deserved label. Although Malawi is one of the 2-3 poorest countries in Africa, the people are very friendly and industrious. It is a country of 12 million people and most rely on subsistence farming and crafts for survival.

Beginning around November of 2004, Young Life has continued to "move into the neighborhood" in Blantyre, towards the southern end of the country.  Blantyre is the largest city today in Malawi, with approximately 500,000 people. English is the official language there, and there is a fairly high literacy rate in the city. There's a significant number of government secondary schools across the local area.  We're currently running Two YL Clubs, drawing kids from 3 different schools.  The majority of the students we've been involved with here, attend either Elma, a private national high school, or St. Andrews, an international secondary school.

Young Life Malawi Staff
Gary Hopkins, & his wife Judy, came to Malawi with a clear call to disciple kids & leaders, and to develop National Leadership to continue growing Young Life in Malawi, paving the way for the future.  After spending the first year and a half working in the city with kids at private schools, their hope is that over the next couple of years those leaders would begin ministry in government schools, & continue to blaze the trail towards the goal of reaching the "farthest out" kid in Malawi with the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Their hope & vision is to have a Young Life house in Blantyre, that would be a multiple-use facility, & serve as a meeting ground for kids and leaders.  In addition to housing local YL staff, the location would be used to house staff in training, be a central YL Club room, & include a recreational center with basketball, and other sports/activities, as well as potentially even offering an internet cafe, attracting kids from all over to hang out.  The site could be developed for close to around $50,000, and might also serve as the focus for projects associated with work trips as well.

Another goal of the Staff Team is to begin to develop Camping as a major tool for outreach to kids across the community.  Their hope is to eventually have a property, that could be developed to serve that purpose.  That being said, the first ever YL Camp in Malawi is set to begin this summer, in August 2006.

Volunteer Leaders
We have an amazing group of about 15 Volunteer Leaders here today in Malawi.  They are a gifted, passionate group of young men & women, between 18-25 years old.  Three Volunteers, in particular, are looking at & praying about the possibility of serving on Young Life staff here in Malawi in the future.  Reecherd, Wanangwa, & Lusayo, all have strong leadership skills and have a deep love for Christ & for kids.

Reecherd had the great blessing of joining us in Canada at Malibu Camp in June, where he served in the kitchen on Summer Staff for a month.  It was an incredible experience, affording him an opportunity to see Young Life at it's best, & encouraging him personally in his walk with Christ & sense of divine calling to YL's ministry.
