Parents and Community

Even though Young Life is especially for kids, parents and other adults in the community are important to Young Life. Adults can support Young Life in a variety of ways — by becoming a volunteer leader or committee member, by attending a Young Life fund-raising event, by hosting Young Life or by simply telling others in the community about Young Life and its commitment to kids.

Keeping Kids Safe

An important part of our committment to kids is how we keep kids safe. Our staff and volunteer leaders know they are responsible for modeling lives of hope and integrity.Young Life's Human Resources department has developed missionwide policies and procedures to ensure that kids are protected when they are with Young Life staff and/or leaders as well as when kids are part of Young Life sponsored activities.

Young Life in Bellingham is part of a world-class organization for adolescents. Our staff and volunteers enter the world of kids, focusing on what matters to them — fun, adventure, friendship and a sense of significance. In doing so, we earn the privilege of talking to them about something that we think matters most of all — the truth about God and His love for us.

  • Young Life exists in our community because of adults who invite and support our presence. We call them our committee. No doubt you know some of our committee members and supporters.
  • Parents are our partners — we want the best for your kid, too.
  • Young Life was founded in 1941 by a pastor who wanted to spend time with kids who were disinterested in church.
  • Today, you'll find Young Life in 54 countries and supported by 4,000 staff members, more than 14,000 volunteer leaders and almost 12,000 local committee members.
  • Young Life is non-denominational.
  • Our leaders are adults who are screened carefully and trained continuously.

Community Support Groups

Understanding that many people are, for various reasons, not called to serve as either Young Life volunteer leaders, or on the local adult committee, we in Bellingham have defined a very important role that you just might be interested in.

The Community Support Group is a group of people who commit to serving a local leadership team at a specific high school or middle school by praying consistently, providing for various leader and team needs, and serving as advocates for Young Life in their community.  The Community Support Group meets periodically to socialize and hear from their Young Life team; however, much of their communication is via the phone or email.  The value of a group of people such as this cannot be overstated.  Likewise, the joy of partnering on this level in this mission cannot be overstated as well.

So, what do you think?  Do you have some time, a resource, a skill that could be offered to encourage the work of a local Young Life team?  Perhaps you could have a team over for dinner once a quarter?  Or maybe you have a boat, a home, or some other resource that could benefit your local Young Life ministry?  Could you flip burgers at a year-end barbecue, or possibly help supply the food?  Know that anything and everything helps.
