Capernaum Mission & History

Capernaum Ministries (a.k.a. Capernaum Project) is an outreach of Young Life to kids with physical and/or mental disabilities. The goal of Capernaum Ministries is to give kids with disabilities the same chance to hear the Gospel and experience the gift of life as able-bodied kids. Capernaum Ministries is designed to catch any kid who falls through the cracks of the traditional approach.

Nick Palermo started Young Life’s Capernaum Project in 1986 with the support and vision of several key donors. The dream of Young Life for kids with disabilities first emerged in 1980 when Nick, then a Young Life volunteer leader, encountered 25 kids in wheelchairs at Blackford High in San Jose.

Drawn into their world, Young Life leaders soon learned that these kids had the same needs and desires as their able-bodied peers, yet they were isolated and misunderstood by society at large. Even to this day, the Capernaum Project is one of the very few ministries focused on providing social activities and building relationships with disabled teens.
