Young Life in Costa Rica

The majority of groups will serve on projects at La Cumbre, a youth camp which Young Life Costa Rica uses for their local ministry, and on various community projects in the San Jose area.  Short-term teams are meeting a great need for the on-going development and upkeep of this camp where each year thousands of Costa Rican youth are afforded a chance to hear the Gospel.  When possible, teams are hosted for 2-3 days in communities where Young Life maintains a ministry presence.  Teams will visit a local YL club, interact with kids and leaders and get a glimpse of the YL ministry in action.
La Cumbre is located approximately 90 minutes from the capital city of San Jose, in the rain forest.  Accommodations are simple, bunk-type housing.  Temperatures can be cool due to elevation.  Groups will spend one day of their trip sightseeing in the rain forest or at a local beach.

Group size:
15-40 persons, including leaders.  At times, we schedule more than one group at the same time in Costa Rica.  For example, we may have two groups from two different places, comprising a total of 40 persons.  In such cases, you will most likely share evening worship and meeting times, but can retain group autonomy for purposes of discussion, Bible study and question/answer times.  In this scenario groups work, lodge and eat together, but are afforded ample time for individual group fellowship.  You may find this a wonderful help in the area of leadership responsibility.  Along with other group’s trip leaders, you can divide and delegate various leadership roles.  For example, while your group may not have a music/worship leader, another group might.  Together multiple groups can create a more complete experience for your worktrip participants.  If you are scheduled at the same time as another group, you will be put in touch with the other trip leaders beforehand so that you might discuss the sharing of such responsibilities.  The ability to schedule multiple groups greatly benefits our local ministry.

Costa Rica... At A Glance

Costa Rica is Central America's jewel. It's an oasis of calm among its turbulent neighbours and an ecotourism heaven, making it one of the best places to experience the tropics with minimal impact. It's also mostly coastline, which means great surfing, beaches galore and a climate built for laziness.

Costa Rica's enlightened approach to conservation has ensured that lush jungles are home to playful monkeys, languid sloths, crocodiles, countless lizards, poison-dart frogs and a mind-boggling assortment of exotic birds, insects and butterflies. Meanwhile, endangered sea turtles nest on both coasts and cloud forests protect elusive birds and jungle cats.
