Young Life in The Navajo Nation
Come serve with Young Life as the mission works to establish vibrant ministry on the Navajo Native American Indian reservation in New Mexico. The Navajo is the largest reservation in the United States, with more than half a million people, many living without the basic services and amenities that most of us in this country enjoy. Though not an international trip, this is a powerful chance to cross cultures, serve a needy population and help Young Life grow and develop in one of our country's most unique ethnic settings. Trip costs are considerably lower than our international experiences, due to the decrease in travel expenses. Most destinations can be easily reached by driving or by domestic flights with reasonable airfare. If driving, tack on a few extra days for sightseeing along the way. The Grand Canyon is approximately 6 hours from the worksite, the resort towns of Taos and Sante Fe, in the Rocky mountains, about 2-3 hours away. Opportunities for whitewater rafting, hiking, canyoneering, etc., exist within a few hour's drive. Projects are on Native American reservations where Young Life is developing a ministry presence. Service opportunities include housing repair and construction for needy families, building outdoor latrines, updating community recreation facilities, a proposed solar power project, etc. Groups will have opportunities to visit local Young Life clubs, see Native American dances, enjoy traditional cultural meals, explore the surrounding country, etc. Housing is either in traditional Navajo "hooghans", at local campgrounds or with Young Life staff and volunteers. |

The Navajo Nation... At A Glance
The Navajo Nation extends into the states of Utah , Arizona and New Mexico , covering over 27,000 square miles of unparalleled beauty. Diné Bikéyah, or Navajoland, is larger than 10 of the 50 states in America.
Visitors from around the world are intrigued and mystified when they hear the Navajo language – so, too, were the enemy during World War II. Unknown to many, the Navajo language was used to create a secret code to battle the Japanese. Navajo men were selected to create codes and serve on the front line to overcome and deceive those on the other side of the battlefield. Today, these men are recognized as the famous Navajo Code Talkers, who exemplify the unequaled bravery and patriotism of the Navajo people. |
