Internships and Summer Staff
Spring Internships
Are you looking for something different to do this spring? Are you ready for a life changing experience in a new culture? Do you enjoying serving others and being challenged in your walk with God? Did you want to be on summer staff but didn't have the time? Then our Spring Intern program is for you! Our spring intern program is very similar to our summer staff program, except in the spring!
Job Description
For the spring of 2009 we are looking for five individuals who would like to serve as Work Bosses here at Pico Escondido. These individuals need to be in college or have completed high school. The facilities of Pico Escondido have been constructed largely through the labor and funds of work teams from the US. Each spring Pico hosts several weeks of work teams to help us with construction and maintenance. These teams typically consist of college and/or high school students who choose to spend their spring break serving at Pico. The spring intern work bosses help to supervise small groups of the work team members as they do construction, landscaping, furniture building etc. Although experience in construction and landscaping is helpful, it is more important that you can encourage, guide, and motivate your work group. Please be aware that while you will have interaction with Dominican kids from time to time, your time with us will mostly consist of directing and loving on work team members from the US
Dates and Costs
Dates for Spring 2009: Tentativley set for Febuary 26 - April 5
What will it cost me? Everything! You will never be the same after an experience like this! Unlike Young Life properties in the US, Pico Escondido does not enjoy capital surpluses to help offset the expenses of hosting volunteer laborers. For this reason, it is necessary for spring interns to pay set fees. However, Young Life makes it possible for you to raise these funds through tax-deductible donations. We will guide you through each step of this process and you will be amazed at how the Lord raises up a "team" of supporters to stand behind your mission!
Spring Intern costs for 2009 have been set at $875 and you will be required to cover your own airfare costs. The Dominican Republic also requires you to pay a $10 entrance fee. Any money for additional travel either before or after your spring intern session, gifts, souvenirs, or daily extras (sodas, trips to town, etc) will be each individual's responsibility.
If you are accepted to be a Spring Intern, we will send you a thorough packet of information to help you write fundraising "support" letters and generate donations in other ways. Please do not let costs or fundraising be a deterrent to your involvement! It is a wonderful exercise in faith and a great way to see the provisional hand of God.

The summer staff experience is a total ministry immersion experience, where you live and experience true Latin American culture. Our summer staff live at camp just outside of the small town of Jarabacoa in the Cordillera Central - the mountain range in the center of the Dominican Republic. It is here that they work and lead our work teams. In addition to the time at camp, the summer staff spend 4 to 5 days in a local community in the homes of our Young Life leaders, doing community service projects and building relationships with the Dominican leaders. In addition, most summer staff groups take a 3 day trip to Playa Fronton, a beach where we go to climb on an amazing natural rock face. Altogether it proves to be an amazing time of growth. We offer both a shorter, 6-week “Regular Session” Summer Staff opportunity as well as a longer, typically 10-12 week “All-Summer” opportunity. See details on dates, costs and job opportunities below. Summer Staff Job Roles & Responsibilities Regular Session job positions typically include the following: * 5 work bosses (construction, rocking, landscaping, etc.) * 2 kitchen/laundry/housekeeping helpers * 2 Summer Staff Coordinators All-Summer Session job positions typically include: * 2 construction interns * 1 video intern * 3 work team hosts * 1 kitchen intern.
For these intern positions, you must have some experience in the area. Our interns are asked to take on a lot more responsibility than the summer staffers. * wilderness helpers...there are 1-2 positions available to help guide with our DR Wilderness "Exposure" Program, directed by staff person Laura Statesir. The Exposure program is for both Dominican and North American small groups looking for an adventure-based discipleship experience. Exposure trips will typically include a shorter, 1-3 day service project element, as well as opportunities to backpack, rock-climb, snorkel, whitewater raft, etc. Guides will work with Laura when teams are participating. At all other times, Adventure Guides will be working in various roles alongside their fellow summer staff. Typically there are no more than 2-3 weeks of Exposure teams in the course of a summer.
Summer 2009 Dates and Costs Regular Session June 5-July 13th $1,275 plus airfare All-Summer Internships June 3-August 6th or 13th Approximately $1,475* plus airfare Note: costs vary for all-summer interns depending on length of stay... Fundraising Summer Staff and All-Summer Interns are able to fundraise through Young Life for the costs listed above, NOT including airfare. It might be possible to fundraise for your airfare, but this would need to be done via another non-profit agency, i.e. a church.
If you are accepted for one of our summer positions, we will send you helpful information to make your fundraising as easy as possible. Application process: For more details about our DR summer program and to apply on-line, visit www.picoescondido.com, click on “Opportunities” then “Summer Staff”. An on-line application is located in the upper right corner of the page. Please be sure to submit fully completed applications. Keep in mind that we accept applications into the spring months and typically do not finalize our summer staff until March of each year. Thanks for your patience with us! If you have questions about your application, please email Laura Statesir in the DR at laura@picoescondido.com . Laura will be reviewing all applications. |
