Dominican Republic 101

The Dominican Republic is located in the Caribbean Sea, 500 miles southeast of Florida.  It lies between Cuba and Puerto Rico on the island of HispaƱola, which it shares with Haiti.  It is a country rich in history, and its capital, Santo Domingo, was the first city built by Europeans in the New World.

A Land Beyond Compare

The D.R. is a land of contrasts with towering mountains, rocky cliffs, rain forests, fertile valleys, deserts, and white sand beaches.  On the island lie the highest (Pico Duarte) and lowest (Lago Enriquillo) points in the Caribbean.  Young Life has a presence in Santo Domingo, Santiago, Jarabacoa, and Barranca.

A People Rich in Spirit

The D.R. is the second largest country in the Greater Antilles and has a population of over 9 million.  The country is a melting pot of races due to the past presence of European explorers, Taino Indians, and African slaves.  The main language is Spanish, with a distinct personality due to Caribbean phrases and accents.

The culture in the D.R. is similar to that of most Latin American countries.  Dominicans are gracious, warm, and outgoing.  They are a relational people for whom friendships and relationships are more important than schedules.  Privacy and personal space are unimportant; touching is normal and crowding is common.  Music and games are a very big part of the culture, as are baseball and basketball.  Festivals, carnivals, and other celebrations are common and lively.
