Young Life got started as a part of The Miracle Book Club in 1938 by Jim Rayburn.
 
The Young Life Campaign began in 1940 when Club was first called a Young Life Club. 
 
Young Life was incorporated in 1941 in Gainesville, Texas
 
Young Life is active today in nearly 15% of all U.S. high schools
 
Young Life is active in over 60 countries
 
Over 1,000,000 kids are involved in Young Life annually worldwide
 
Over 50,000 kids will go to a Young Life Camp this summer

Memphis Timeline

1943 - First Evangelical Church brought Young Life founder Jim Rayburn to speak in Memphis at a retreat in Shelby Forrest.   Later that fall Young Life Clubs started at Central High School and then at Tech High School
 
1943 - First staff person came to Memphis.  Ad Sewall?
 
1952 - CFAPTHI was started in conjunction with Second Presbyterian Church by Rollin Wilson. CFAPTHI means (Can't Find A Place To Have It.) Today it is Young Life for MUS, Hutchison and St. Mary's
 
1964 - Carl Nelson became the Memphis Area Director.
 
1968 - Rollin Wilson began the CFAPTHI Private School Spring Break Colorado Ski Trip
 
1976 - Young Life Memphis Urban started at Melrose High School
 
1978 - East Shelby County became it's own Area - First Area Director A.B. Scott.  The Area was for Germantown and Collierville High Schools.
 
1978 - A.B. Scott began the Christmas Ski Trip
 
1980 - Brad Baker moved back to Memphis to become the Memphis Area Diirector.
 
1982 - East Shelby County merged back into Memphis Young Life.
 
1996 - The Rollin Wilson Young Life House at 658 Colonial was purchased and dedicated in honor of Rollin Wilson.
 
1997 - David & Karen Greene contacted Brad Baker, Memphis Metro Director, about having Young Life in Collierville and we recruited a Committee.
 
1998 - Young Life began to use the Log Cabin at 9286 Poplar in Germantown  owned by the Forest Hill Civic Club for the Germantown and Houston Club
 
1998 - Collierville became an Area.  Phil Zweerink was the first Area Director.  David and Karen Greene were the first Committee. 
 
2004 - The Jay Holcomb Urban Center of Hope at 1177 Poplar Avenue opened.
 
2005 - Last Spring Break Ski Trip - combined with Christmas Ski Trip to take everyone together.
 
2006 - First Club started at SBEC.  First Area Director Ray Pettigrew.  John & Kristi Arnold, Marcie Draper, Dave Fox, Riki Jackson, David Manley, Dan & Elaine Mueller, Harry Phillips and Richard Williams were the first Committee.  Brad Baker was the Memphis Metro Director that helped start the Area.
 
2007 - First Young Life Club started at Millington High School.  First Area Director Jeremy Crabtree.  Dick and Nancy Barnhart were the first Committee couple.  Rick Hornsby.  Memphis Metro Director Brad Baker helped start the Area.  Memphis East provided training for Jeremy his first two years.
 
2008 - Joel Scoggins became the Area Director for Memphis East.
 
2009 -  First club in West Memphis Area started at Marion High School.  First Volunteer Area Director John Beaumont (and Jill)  First Committee person Mary Ellen "Randy" Caldwell. First Committee Chair David Peeples.
 
2009 - Last Memphis Christmas Ski Trip
 
2010 - All Memphis Weekend Camp to Windy Gap - All Memphis Metro Clubs involved - we took 250 kids!
 

Today in Memphis

There are 16 Clubs with Young Life at 22 High Schools
 
There is one Wyldlife Club and one YoungLives Club
 
Today over 1000 kids are actively involved in Young Life in the greater Memphis Metropolitan area.
 
Last year, 370 kids from Memphis had a Young Life camp experience.
 
Last year 125 kids were involved in Campaigners Bible Study.
