Dr. William "Chubby" Andrews

Dr. William "Chubby" Andrews, who died at the age of 84 on June 29, 2005 was a local legend, not only in his hometown of Memphis, TN, but also throughout the mission of Young Life.  Dr. Chubby, who served on the Young Life board of Trustess, also had fervor for the outdoors and for hunting, surpassed only by his passion for Jesus Christ and getting His message to kids.

Dr. Chubby, who worked as a physician, was involved in Young Life in Memphis from its beginning. In 1941 he attended a Young Life weekend retreat being held for the purpose of starting Youing Life in Memphis.  After Jim Rayburn, the mission's founder, spoke about Jesus death on the cross,  Andrews committed his life to Jesus Christ.

After Dr. Chubby's death, his wife, Marje, found a handwritten note from Rayburn to him. Rayburn wrote:   "I am really praying that you will go on with the Lord, Chubby, and let him run that life of yours."

And "Chubby" as he had been affectionately called since he was a baby--did continue on growing in his faith, and he impacted many people.  The Andrews, who became close friends of the Rayburns, were also passionate about introducing other couples to Young Life.  Dr. Chubby also desired to see committees form that supported staff well.  He was a long-time member of the Memphis committee.

Not only were Dr. Chubby and his wife, Marje, instrumental in getting Young Life started in Memphis, but they also gave money each year to help send kids to camp.  He realized the impact that a week away from Memphis at a Young Life camp could have on a young person's life.  And although Dr. Chubby was more of hunter than he was a basketball player, it was his love for Christ and his passion for kids meeting Christ that we proudly name this event after him - The Dr. Chubby Andrews Christmas Shoot-Out!
