Being a single father with two wonderful daughters to raise in the world we live in today is very challenging. My oldest daughter Tanyss has always been one of the kindest and most thoughtful people I have ever known. Unfortunately, due to her disability and lack of confidence, on many occasions she felt isolated and was not included in mainstream activities while attending grade school and junior high school. While attending Ballard High School Tanyss was invited to a Young Life Capernaum event. We didn’t really know what to expect since Tanyss had not participated in any type of functions outside of school.
To my relief, Young Life Capernaum has been one of the most important parts of Tanyss and my family’s lives for the past ten years. Tanyss has a much better understanding of how wonderful God is and his impact on our daily lives. She has and is building lifelong relationships that mean so much to her. She is always excited about going to club to have fun. Her self esteem has improved dramatically as a result of attending Young Life Capernaum. Tanyss feels included and appreciated and has gone places, done and seen things she never imagined she would.
Tanyss started attending club when she was sixteen and she is now twenty-five. The club has been so successful over this time span that a separate club was created for young adults (21 years old and above). She continues to learn about life and herself with the help of the Young Life leaders. Best of all, Tanyss has always been treated with the utmost respect, kindness and understanding. She feels safe and continually receives and gives unconditional love.
Young Life Capernaum is truly one of the most important keys to Tanyss’ current and future emotional, physical and spiritual health. I strongly recommend it as a place where kids with disabilities and their families can discover a fun, safe, inclusive and loving spiritual home.
