Capernaum Camp Information

Thank you for your interest in Asian Young Life’s Capernaum Camp!

This summer, several dozen young people involved in our Asian Young Life Campaigners group along with some teens from the youth group at CCCNJ will be heading down to Rockbridge in Virginia to make a difference in the lives of others at Capernaum Camp.

What is Campaigners? What is Capernaum? Campaigners is the name of our Asian Young Life discipleship ministry to teenagers who have a desire to know more about the Christian faith. Capernaum is the name of Young Life’s ministry to kids with disabilities. These two ministries will be coming together hand-in-hand during our week at camp. Our Campaigners kids along with kids from CCCNJ will essentially be serving the Capernaum kids in the hope of giving these Capernaum kids the “best week of their life.” Our trained leaders and the Young Life camp staff are committed to providing all participants a safe and blessed experience at camp. At the conclusion of the camp, Asian Young Life will credit and certify all teenage workers with 40 hours of community service.

Camp Information

Camp: Young Life's Rockbridge
170 Spring House Rd.
Goshen, VA 24439
Dates: Monday, July 21, to Friday, July 25, 2008
Phone: (540) 997-9276

A licensed medical physician and an EMT live on the camp property and are available 24 hours a day in the event of an emergency. In addition, a fully stocked infirmary is located on the camp premises and provides basic medical services and emergency treatment.

The camp office is open everyday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. If your parents wish to speak with you or to contact the camp for any reason, they should call the camp phone number and speak with the receptionist.

If your parents call the camp after hours, they will have the opportunity to leave a message on the office answering machine. In EMERGENCY situations, your parents should listen to the recorded announcement; the message will direct them to the phone number of the on-call person assigned to handle emergencies for that particular evening.

Pre-Camp Requirements

There will be an important and mandatory pre-camp meeting on Sunday afternoon, July 13, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM, at Peter Lee's house, 734 Peach Tree Lane in Franklin Lakes, NJ. At this meeting you will learn about serving kids with disabilities and what will be expected of you at Capernaum Camp. We will also spend some time praying for our mission. Make sure you bring a Bible and a pen or pencil (and your copy of Adam, if you have one). In addition to discussing matters relevant to our trip, we will also enjoy some time to get to know each other better. Pizza will be served at the start of the meeting along with other refreshments. When the meeting is over, Peter's indoor swimming pool will be open for us to enjoy, so be sure to bring your swimming suit! If you normally have commitments on Sunday afternoons, please make arrangements now to get out of those commitments so that you can attend this mandatory meeting.

In addition, you will be required to read the book Adam: God's Beloved (by Henri Nouwen) prior to our meeting on July 13. This book will help you understand what it is like to love and serve someone with disabilities. Copies will be made available at Bergen County Campaigners and at CCCNJ.

Additional Information

You will be served by a team of dedicated and caring adults who have been trained as Asian Young Life leaders. The leaders for this trip are as follows:
Leaders: Dr. Brian Hall, Mr. Fred Huang, Mrs. Frances Lin, and Mr. Mike Shum

Camp Policies

  • Electronic accessories (like the iPod, PSP, Gameboy, Sony Discman, MP3 players, CD players, etc.) are NOT permitted at camp. These things can be easily stolen, thus ruining what otherwise would have been a good week for you. We STRONGLY advise you to leave these items at home. If you do bring electronic items like these on the bus, they will be collected on arrival at camp and stored in the cabin safe for the duration of the week. Of course, all items will be returned to you when we depart camp. Just be sure to mark your name on each electronic item.
  • Cell phones are NOT permitted at camp. We realize that your parents may wish to contact you on your cell phone, but please understand that the camp is remotely located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, so as a result very few cell phones actually work at camp. Any cell phone brought on the bus will be collected on arrival at camp and stored in camp safe for the duration of the week. If your parents wish to contact you, they should call the camp office at (540) 997-9276 and have you paged. If you wish to call home, pay phones are available at the camp. Please be sure to bring a calling card with you.
  • Absolutely no alcohol or illegal drugs are permitted. If you bring such items to camp, your parents will be notified and required to pick you up at camp and take you home immediately
