Young Life in Nicaragua
In October 1988, Jim Hornsby came by invitation to implement a program for the youth of Nicaragua. Jim and his wife, Sarah, had gained fourteen years of Young Life experience in Jacksonville, Florida. Jim felt the strong call of God to work in Nicaragua, especially with marginalized youth.
Beginning their stay in Matagalpa, they made contacts with youth by means of classes of English and sports, while also searching for adults in those neighborhoods who could build Christ-centered friendships with youth in their neighborhoods.
In 1989, a group of 15 adults formed with the desire to see a well organized structure. They formulated objectives, activities and functions of the program, and in 1999, it was officially approved as a non-profit religious foundation. In addition to this group of adults, each neighborhood where a Club is formed has a Committee of Parents.
In Nicaragua the average age is 16! There are many youth with the desire to prosper mentally, culturally, and spiritually. However, given the low development that infects the country, the development of youth in Nicaragua has been impaired. Because of this, many have become alcoholics, drug addicts, handicapped, delinquents, apathetic, and lacking the ability to produce. This is the reason why Young Life is needed in the country-to motivate and change adolecents lives! Please consider being a partner in reaching this vast need in Nicaragua. |
