Young Life Paraguay

Fabian and Ledy Bruzzone, both natives of Paraguay, went to the U.S. last year as part of a mission's project with their church.  They were placed in San Francisco, California to do youth ministry in the city.  During that year, they met Tony Gonzales, our Young Life Area Director in the Mission District of San Francisco.  They quickly became volunteer leaders and worked with Tony in leading a Young Life club, developing leaders, and taking kids to camp.  They were given an inside look at what Young Life is and how it works.

At the completion of their time in June 2006, they asked Tony how they could begin Young Life in their country.  This led to a conversation with Joe Walters and several follow-up conversations via email and phone.  A visit from Joe in October 2006 confirmed that Fabian was the right person to begin the ministry in Paraguay.

Young Life Paraguay started in June, 2007. Nowadays we are working in the north east of Asuncion (capital city). We have contact with more than 70 teenagers in the “Loma Pyta” neighborhood, and 55 kids participate in the club. Some kids have made the decision for Christ and we have begun Bible Studies with these kids.  Our goal is to open two new clubs in “key” neighborhoods in Asuncion. If we reach this goal, we will be sharing with more than 160 teenagers. We are praying for more leaders and support that help us to continue.

Fabian and Ledy reside in Asuncion, and have one child.

The Need

According to the last census made in 2003:
• 24% of the Paraguayan people are teenagers.
• 14% of kids between 9 and 13 years old, and 28% of kids between 14 and 19 years old do not attend school.
• 33% of the Paraguayan people live in “extreme poverty”
• 19% of kids between 12 and 18 years old, need to work.
• In the cities, 62% of teenagers between 12 and 16 years old, have tried alcohol.
• 10% of girls between 12 and 15 years old are moms or pregnant for the firs time.

A Word from Fabian

Since becoming a Christian, God has shown me that He is a God who wants to have a personal relationship with everyone. He wants to give us a purpose for life, but more importantly, He wants to love us. This is why He always tries to come close to us and reach us. If you look into the Bible, you will find a lot of stories about His love. In Mark, you will find the story of the touch of Jesus on a leper, and in John, Jesus talks with a Samaritan woman.

You see, God does not know how to love from a distance. He is a God of intimacy, of touch. His love is a love of proximity, a love of nearness.

This love is the essence of Young Life. It is a love that will have us seek teenagers and enter their world. It is a love that will patiently earn the right to be heard.

Young Life is all about loving kids into Christ´s arms.
