In 1968, a man named Dieter Koerner began Young Life (known as Algo Nuevo) in Peru. In 1977, national Peruvians stepped out and began leading Young Life in their country. A time of growth and development followed, with a restructuring of the ministry occuring in 1996. There has been a steady increase in the number of teenagers Young Life in Peru has been reaching, and it only continues to grow and expand.
Several vital structures have been put into place that has helped Young Life in Peru to develop. One of the most vital pieces is having a board of nationals that help to guide and direct the national director, Enrique Vargas, and staff. Capernaum has also been planted in the country with Edson Gomez, a national, that continues to help it flourish. Another important part of the ministry has been the development of the camping program. Over a hundred kids from nine different ministries had the chance to go to camp this past year!
Peru also runs a ministry to disabled kids, called Capernaum. To learn more about one of our US staff helping with this ministry and how you can help, please click below!
