Twenty-five years ago, Charlie Scott attended a short-term mission trip to Haiti. Soon after he returned, he decided to open a small school outside of Port au Prince to help educate children as well as provide them with a meal a day. For over 20 years more than 800 students have attended this school. Because of Charlie's connection with Young Life, an environment was created that opened the discussion for beginning the ministry in Haiti.
In 1998, Scott Steele flew to Haiti for the first time to meet Charlie Scott in order to develop a plan to start Young Life in Haiti. Several national leaders, Chedrick, Paul, and Kerline, attended a volunteer training camp in the Dominican Republic in 1998, and in October of 1999, three clubs were implemented.
The ministry grew quickly as Chedrick, the current National Director, took over doing contact work and recruiting volunteers. In September 2004, the first summer camp was held. Today, there are 15 clubs in five cities. All of the staff are nationals and are consistently reaching out and bringing more kids into Christ's love. |
