Asian Young Life in Morris County
In August 2003, two Sunday school teachers from a Chinese church in Parsippany took a group of eight Asian American kids from Morris County to Young Life's Saranac Village for a week of Young Life camp. Needless to say, the kids loved it, their lives were changed, and, thus, Asian Young Life was born.
With that humble beginning, a new movement began not only in Young Life but also in Asian American youth ministry as well. The principle that mentoring relationships are key in the spiritual and emotional development of Asian American adolescents received increased attention as the ministry of Asian Young Life began to spread to other areas of northern New Jersey. What began in Morris County eventually found its way to Bergen County, where literally hundreds of Asian American kids are now impacted on a regular basis.
For a few years the Asian Young Life ministry in Morris County thrived as many caring adults came together to serve the kids in Parsippany, East Hanover, Montville, and other neighboring towns. As recently as November 2006, there were more than 135 kids at one of our Morris County club outreach meetings, and in the summer of 2007 we took more than 30 kids from Morris County to our Young Life camp in upstate New York. Sadly, recent changes in our Morris County leadership team have made it difficult to continue to serve the kids of Morris County in a full capacity.
Be assured, the Morris County ministry continues, but we drastically need additional adults to join us in reaching out to the many Chinese, Korean, and other Asian teens in the area. If you are an adult and you have a desire to make a difference in this world, please give serious thought to the idea of joining us as a volunteer leader or by serving in some other way. We need you! The Asian American kids of Morris County need you! Please contact us so we can talk.
