Empowering Kids and Our Community in 2007/08

On September 8, Area Director Chris Girardi took the Young Life NW DC Committee and Volunteer Leaders on a retreat to Avalon, New Jersey. Chris presented his vision for Young Life NW DC for the new school year. The message? Empowerment – empowering the kids, the volunteers, and the support community to sustain the ministry long term. Chris has identified specific goals for Club, Campaigners, and the Community.

Club — Chris hopes to have an entirely volunteer-led Club in Columbia Heights by the end of 2007, freeing up O’Brien Wimbish to launch Club at Cardozo High School this year.

Campaigners — One of the primary goals this year is discipleship. Already, YLNWDC campaigner Bible studies are underway. Volunteers leaders are pursuing one-on-one discipleship with kids. Through this effort, YL is training the future leaders for middle school clubs and camp trips.

Community — This year YLNWDC is seeking to empower the community of NW DC by inviting parents, neighbors, and churches to get involved with this ministry. Efforts are underway to actively recruit future leaders at clubs, participate in prayer, and join the committee.

39 For 39!

This fall, YLNWDC Committee is launching a huge fundraising campaign; the 39 for 39 Campaign. We’re searching and praying for 39 supporters willing to step up and contribute $39 per month to Young Life NW DC (Area 39). Committee Member Profile: Kevin Smith

Young Life introduces Kevin Smith, new committee member and chairman of the 39 for 39 campaign.

Kevin has been involved with YL, all his life. As a teenager, Kevin found Young Life to be an effective tool for sharing Christ with his friends. While attending Union College, Kevin volunteered at one of the local Kentucky high schools and grew familiar with amazing camp and club Young Life ministeries.

Working for a United States Senator, Kevin recently completed an MBA program at the University of Kentucky and looks forward to using these new business and accounting skills toward leading the campaign. Kevin stated, "I'm excited about this opportunity to serve Young Life and see what God is going to do in support of reaching kids in DC through the 39 for 39 campaign."
