What Kids Have To Say:
"I went to Wildhorse Canyon and got to hang out with my friends, learn about trusting God and do fun things like the ridge runners and zip line. Most of the time I am in a wheelchair but while I was at camp I had the chance to fly on a giant swing--it was awesome!"
-David

"I like coming to Open Door because its a place where I can be with all my friends, and my old friends just having fun and hanging out while learning about God and how much he loves us."
-Tanyss

Reaching Out To Kids with Disabilities! Who Me? Yes, YOU!
The most common response to me when people hear about world of disabilities is “You have got to be special to do this. I could never do it.” My response to that is, “Yes, you can do it, all you need is a willingness to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.” Along with that a willingness to know kids and discover how to relate to them. Not everyone is called to work with kids with disabilities vocationally, but everyone can learn to be a friend to kids with disabilities. This has been my greatest asset, being a friend to kids. It’s okay if you are afraid, even repulsed at times, I was, but it is not okay to run away as the result of your fears, discomfort, or ignorance. One of the things I cherish the most in this ministry is that the majority of volunteers have had no experience with people with disabilities. They have learned.
So, you’re afraid; you are uncomfortable; you feel inadequate; you don’t see how you could possibly do it; you think you must be crazy for even thinking about doing this; you are terrified you will harm a kid….
CONGRATULATIONS,
YOU ARE PERFECT FOR THE JOB!
